Summer Begins!

Summer Placements in Academia

Within the UK

SEPNet bursaries are exclusively available to students from Universities in the SEPNet consortium consisting of University of Kent, Queen Mary, Royal Holloway, University of Southampton, University of Sussex and University of Surrey. There are many bursaries available not only to undertake research at one of these institutions but to work at external companies. There will be a list of available placements published during the year.

The Nuffield and RAS bursaries work in similar manners in that you have to go and find a supervisor at a University willing to have you as a summer student and then they apply. They’re great experiences and can even lead to published work.

International Placements

Don’t feel restricted to applying to the UK for Summer Placements. There are many companies and schemes abroad taking British students so have a look around. Here are a few examples.

USA

Generally only US citizens can get places because most bursaries are run by the NSF. If you trudge through the NSF website though there are some which allow non-US citizens so if you’re really desperate to have a placement in America, click here NSF

Germany

First off no German is needed to apply to these organizations and the internships are aimed at people with no German knowledge, but of course its an advantage.

In Germany one can find many summer placements in lots of fields including physics on the German academic exchange service’s (DAAD) research internship in science and engineering (RISE) program.

The rest of the World

Have you heard of IAESTE? We are the biggest global organisation for students in the world, we organise internships in 107 countries and we have links to many international companies allowing you to discover a new culture as well as gaining new skills and developing yourself in an unfamilar environment.

The majority of our interships will happen over the summer holidays and if you don’t want to spend them working, we also organise voluntary work in many other countries.
