Career Resources

Careers tutor

Dr Tom Maccarone is the Academic in charge of careers. If you need any other help with Careers, contact him. He has a webpage with more details and contact information. There are also slides on his website from a talk that he gave on careers in academia.

SEPnet

The South East Physics Network(SEPnet) is a consortium of six partner universities working together to advance and sustain Physics. Basically what this boils down to for us as undergraduates is they give us a hand getting into a physics career by helping fund summer placements and by helping us find them to begin with. They offer bursaries if we want to do a summer placement at one of the other universities in the consortium or if we want to do a placement in industry. They also have a very well funded Euro-Masters degree. There is more information on SEPnet’s website

Online

There is some good information here with links to many more sites that could be helpful when looking for a job as it links to jobs listings in specific types of physics (hep, qlm, astro …) along with other non-physics fields. There is also lots of other info here, check it out.

Employer Database on blackboard

There is a large database of companies with links to the IOP and the university on blackboard. Its in a section called “Placement and Careers Resources for Physics and Astronomy Students”. These companies are a good place to look for summer placements and also future careers with. The databases contain contact information, office locations and the fields they work in.

University Careers Service

Science fair

The IT, Science & Engineering Careers Destinations Fair is a yearly event where you can meet employers who would be interested in hiring summer students and graduates. They aren’t just science companies either but just people who want the skill set that you get from a physics degree like banks for out analytical skills. You can find a complete set of campaniles that attended last years fair on their website above.

Student Conferences

UKSEDS

UKSEDS is a student space conference, with lots of interesting speakers. Below is some infomation from their flyer:

The UKSEDS conference provides an opportunity for students to meet and network with academic and industrial representatives from the UK space industry. Speakers will provide an in depth look at the huge involvement the UK has in space technology and exploration. The talks and presentations on missions such as the Venus and Mars Express spacecraft, Herschel, Cubesat projects and microsatellite research will show how you can get involved in the UK space industry.

IOP Conferences

The IOP has a student branch called NEXUS, who hold many events for students. These include the International Conference of Physics Students in Austria and Nexus Student Conference to name a few. At these conferences you can create contacts with other students and universities.
